Two channels within the specialism
Channel A. Voluntary market.
Projects whose offtake sits with an investment-grade corporate buyer or a balance-sheet principal broker. The credit quality of the offtake is what makes the project bankable. Capital on this channel comes from corporate treasuries, specialist NbS debt funds, climate-thesis private credit, DFI carbon desks, and family offices with a carbon mandate.
Channel B. Compliance market.
Projects whose credits are structured to qualify into a defined regime, including Japan's GX-ETS, Korea's K-ETS, Singapore's Article 6 pathway, South Africa's carbon-tax offset framework, and the adjacent regimes coming online. Compliance eligibility is what makes the project bankable. Capital on this channel comes from commodity funds, hedge fund commodity desks, banks with commodity or compliance-carbon books, physical carbon traders, and corporate compliance treasuries in the target regime.
Both pools of capital sit primarily across the United Kingdom, continental Europe, the United States, Singapore, and Japan.
